Kirwans Managing Partner David Kirwan believes Moors Murderer Ian Brady will die without ever revealing the whereabouts of ‘missing’ victim Keith Bennett.
Mr Kirwan, who represented Keith’s mother Winnie Johnson, was interviewed by BBC Radio following the Crown Prosecution Service’s decision (11th February 2013) not to bring charges over an alleged letter containing details of Keith’s grave on Saddleworth Moor, Greater Manchester.
Brady’s mental health advocate Jackie Powell had claimed to have been handed the letter by Brady to be opened after his death.
The CPS had considered charging Ms Powell with unlawfully preventing a proper burial. John Dilworth, Head of the CPS North West Complex Case Unit, said: “After careful consideration, we have decided that Ms Powell should not be charged, as it cannot be established that she knew the contents of the letter referred to, that the letter in question existed or what information it might have contained.”
Keith Bennett was 12 when he was snatched from the street by Brady and his accomplice Myra Hindley in 1964. He was abused by the pair and his body buried on the moors. Mrs Johnson, 78, died last August without her son’s body ever being found.
Mr Kirwan, who held two face-to-face meetings with Brady at Ashworth high security hospital, Maghull, north Merseyside, in 2007 in a bid to persuade him to reveal the whereabouts of Keith's body, told the BBC: “The secret remains with Brady himself and it will soon die with him. Sadly, we may have to accept that Keith Bennett should be left in peace wherever it is.”
